The Problem with Real-World Assets: in DeFi As institutional Real-World Assets (RWAs) enter the blockchain ecosystem, they face a fundamental friction point: they are strictly at odds with permissionless Decentralized Finance (DeFi). Traditional assets—whether they are tax credits, real estate, or private equity—carry rigid legal, jurisdictional, and KYC/AML requirements. If an institution uses one of these restricted assets as collateral for a DeFi loan and subsequently defaults, the lending protocol's smart contract will automatically attempt to transfer the asset to an anonymous liquidator. This would instantly violate compliance laws, potentially invalidate the asset entirely, and trap the lender's capital, making institutional DeFi lending practically impossible.
