SmartTerra
By SmartTerraSmartTerra provides an AI-powered software platform to municipal and industrial water utilities for real-time monitoring and continuous predictive analysis of the utility water networks. SmartTerra’s platform consists of multiple plug-and-play AI-powered data-analytics modules to provide individual functionalities for individual utility pain-points and use existing data that the utility is already collecting. Used together, the platform can help utilities achieve comprehensive data analytics and analytics-driven workflows for proactive operations and maintenance (O&M). SmartTerra’s key innovation is the confluence of data-science, hydraulic modeling, codified water utility O&M expertise and software engineering. The combination elevates the platform above regular IoT or SCADA software which provide just monitoring and basic dashboarding; engineering-first or design-first Digital Twins which struggle with unreliable or noisy data; and digital field/facility workflows without the capability to analyze or learn on a continuous basis. This analytical combination and the deep insights are usually provided by integrating multiple point-solutions or by expensive, and thus infrequent, consultancy projects by large engineering companies. SmartTerra’s platform is more scalable, provides better RoI, is quicker to deploy and provides continuous analytical insights.

Why it is worth it
AI-powered data analytics with codified water utility expertise to help utilities reduce non-revenue water and improve revenue.
- With climate change induced water stress and flooding, Cities and Industries, must ensure reliable and resilient water supply; improve the use of treated water; minimize flood risks and sewer overflows; and maximize the recharge potential of rainfall.
- For large cities, operating hundreds of miles of network with thousands of customers, achieving the above objectives requires them to use AI/ML approaches in order to effectively perform the analysis of data being already acquired from their workflows or monitoring data from deployed sensors and meters.
- Similarly, Industries, operating multiple treatment plants with complex use and reuse of water, can vastly benefit from AI-enabled risk-based maintenance for internal water and wastewater utilities to minimize service downtime and improved water footprint of their processes.
- SmartTerra currently provides AI-driven analytical modules, which create an approximate digital twin of the water supply network and utility consumption by synthesizing hydraulic network data; monitoring data from sensors and meters; and historical maintenance data. The data-unified digital twin becomes the base for combined AI/ML, geospatial and hydraulic modules which subsequently localize leaky pipes, faulty meters, and predict assets that are likely to fail.
- The utility staff is able to access these insights as geospatially rich visualizations and as prioritized field tasks on a mobile app. The validation feedback from the field helps the algorithms get better in the subsequent iteration.
- The plug and play adaptability of the platform helps utility-specific data pipelines be setup quickly and be individualized to the utility's datasets and hydrography.
- The solution is being extended to model hydraulic & hydrologic scenarios to generate sewer overflows and flood risk maps.

Notable paying customers
- Suez, Larsen & Toubro, Galfar/NAMA, Saint Gobain.
2020-2021 - Piloting: SmartTerra conducted 14 pilots in 5 countries while building the analytics products. We applied design thinking for understanding the field level challenges of both utilities and private operators. We deployed our analytics remotely and participated in field validation for a few cities, working along with the utility's field staff. This enabled us to codify various utility workflows into our software and mobile app. 2022-2023 : World-class algorithmic accuracies: L&T and Suez evaluated our results against other solutions from other startups/companies and pushed us to improve the leak detection and prediction accuracies of our algorithms. We incorporated transparent metrics such as 'NRW reduction achieved' into the dashboards. 2024: City-scale contracts: After our pilots, we understood that we have to provide field services in India to improve the acceptability of our software analytics. With this new business model, L&T gave us a city-scale contract in Pune-India. Suez-Coimbatore gave us a 2-year contract. 2025: Raised USD 1M, primarily led by Siana Capital, to expand in SE Asia and explore Australia and the US. Reduced NRW to below 20% in 5 out of 12 DMAs in Pune-India for L&T. Started Industrial Water Analytics product and got Saint Gobain as the first customer after a 3-month pilot. Multiple pilots underway in Oman and Australia.
